Some more traditional neuropsychological tasks do not reveal improvement to normal levels over test periods of 1 month (Goldman, Whitman, Rosenbaum, & VandeVusse, 1978), 2 months (Tarter & Jones, 1971), 25 weeks (Page & Schaub, 1977), or even 1 year (Long & McLachlan, 1974). Recent work in our laboratories has, however, strongly suggested that these irreversible deficits occur primarily in older alcoholics (over approximately age 40), whereas younger alcoholics recover from most deficits regardless of the length of their drinking history (Goldman, in press).…”
