Intellectual Structure of CORINE Land Cover Research Applications in Web of Science: A Europe-Wide Review

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to manifest the intellectual and cognitive structure of CORINE Land Cover (CLC) research applications. Data from the Web of Science (WoS) was used to delimit publication on CLC during the period from 1985 until 2019 (29th April), retrieving a total of 873 documents. Through author citations, the origins and the most influential papers were identified. The main lines of research were identified from word co-occurrences extracted from the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the pape… Show more

“…Finally, an exploratory statistical analysis was implemented, in order to detect potential statistical associations between the CLC categories in time. The method we retained is the correlation matrix (Pearson's r) between a selected set of variables (14). Strong values of r will indicate that the intensity of land changes is reduced during the analyzed time period.…”

“…The use of CLC at a local administrative unit (LAU2) level is largely unadvised [14], as the degree of land-use generalization might interfere with the local patterns. In this case, numerous policymakers will eventually use CLC just as an informative base of interpretation and not as an analytical frame.…”

“…Analyses of changes in land cover offer the simplest and the most rapid approach to measuring urbanized areas [55]. Land cover data are increasingly available from spatial databases and they can be rapidly processed with the use of GIS tools.…”

“…The procedure during which GIS tools were applied to determine the measures for calculating the OU index based on CLC data is presented in Figure 3. Analyses of changes in land cover offer the simplest and the most rapid approach to measuring urbanized areas [55]. Land cover data are increasingly available from spatial databases and they can be rapidly processed with the use of GIS tools.…”

“…There are potential problems associated with CLC data, applicable to this study, due to the misclassification and differences in the classification schemes and resolutions from one period to another [90,[92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100][101][156][157][158], but also due to the different resolutions (e.g., the CLC dataset has a minimum mapping unit for status layers of 25 hectares, while, minimum the mapping unit for CLC is 5 hectares). Nevertheless, CLC data have proved their usefulness in analyzing urban sprawl [159] and other LCLU changes in Europe [160,161] and even outside the European Union [162], and even in fostering local development [163]. Obviously, the existence of a GIS-ready data set is important in the research economy and could reduce other sources of errors, but does not make the case studies of Vietnam or Algeria less valuable, since they rely on satellite imagery.…”
