Intelligent systems for mixing multichannel audio

Abstract: Multichannel signal processing techniques are usually concerned with extracting information about sources from several received signals. In this paper, we describe an emerging field of multichannel audio signal processing where the inter-channel relationships are exploited in order to manipulate the multichannel content. Applications to realtime, automatic audio production are described and the necessary technologies and the architecture of such systems are presented. The current state of the art is reviewed, … Show more

“…Reiss et al have done extensive work in developing realtime mixing systems for levels, equalization, dynamic range compression and panning [7]. In addition to developing the cross-adaptive approach in Figure 2, they have conducted structured listening tests to evaluate the performance User Ratings Audio Processing Generate Mapping Figure 3: Modeling procedure to relate words that describe sound and timbre to audio signal processing parameters.…”

“…In Perez Gonzalez and Reiss (2011), Reiss (2011), and Reiss (2017), many cross-adaptive digital audio effects were described that aimed to replicate the mixing decisions of a skilled audio engineer with minimal or no human interaction. All of these effects produce mixes where the l th output channel is given by applying controls as shown in 1;…”

“…There have been increasing use of multitracks both in commercial games such as Rock Band, where players attempt to 'play' each part in time with the song, and album releases allowing others to create their own remix. Techniques for the auto-matic mixing of multitracks have been proposed (Reiss, 2011) which choose parameters for equalization and level with the aim of creating a professional quality stereo mix. Intelligent audio editing (Dannenberg, 2007) analyses a set of multitracks using a machine readable score to identify individual notes and help the editing process.…”
