Intensity-modulated directional torsion sensor based on a helical fiber taper

Abstract: A novel intensity-modulated directional torsion sensor based on a helical taper is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The tapers are fabricated in standard single-mode fiber by electric-arc discharge, and by rotating one side fiber simultaneously. Experimental results show that the intensity of transmission peak changes inversely when the helical taper is twisted in clockwise and counterclockwise, respectively. The maximum torsion sensitivity can reach -0.484 dB/(rad/m) in the twist rate ranges from -10… Show more

“…Because of the grating's helical construction, clockwise or anticlockwise twisting can shorten or lengthen the period of grating, causing the resonance wavelength to shift in a different direction. Therefore, HLPG can be effectively applied in the fields of temperature, torsion, and refractive index sensors [7,15,17,18,33,[40][41][42][43]. Li analyzed the effects of LPG and intermodal interference in chiral twisted single-mode fibers (CTSMF) [44].…”

“…An improved HLPG method was proposed by Zhao to achieve the real-time measurement of multiple parameters [7]. To further enhance sensitivity, a fiber taper was introduced in a twisted structure [15]. The experimental results show that the intensity of the transmission peaks varies inversely when the fiber is twisted in different directions.…”

“…The percentage of passing products is low, which is not conducive to the commercial production of sensors. An intensity-modulated directional torsion sensor based on a helical taper fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated [ 18 ]. Moreover, the sensitivity of the sensor can be improved by using a spiral structure and asymmetric structure.…”
