Inter-band carrier aggregation digital transmitter architecture with concurrent multi-band delta-sigma modulation using out-of-band noise cancellation

Abstract: Concurrent multi-band delta-sigma modulation (CMB-DSM) with out-of-band noise cancellation is presented for the first time. A scaled replica modulator creates anti-phased quantization noise for multi-band noise cancellation, consequently reducing adjacent channel leakage and significantly relaxing the design of a multi-band RF filter to suppress undesirable out-of-band emission. A prototype digital transmitter is designed with 6th-order CMB-DSM using a loop filter with stability compensation. Experimental resu… Show more

“…The 1-bit quantizer has an output bit-stream of 0 s (zeros) and 1 s (ones), hence the conversion of a continuous signal into a bi-level modulated signal. This output bi-level signal is suitable for driving a Switching Mode Power Amplifier (SMPA) [ 6 ]. The quantizer should operate at a high oversampling frequency.…”

“…Previous works have focused on improving the performance of DSM-based transmitters in terms of Coding Efficiency (CE) and improvement of the DSM quantization noise shaping, mainly by increasing the order of the DSM or increasing the number of quantization levels. In [ 3 , 4 ], multi-level DSM was investigated, dual-band DSM transmitters were demonstrated in [ 5 , 6 ] focused on the application of carrier aggregation on DSM signals.…”

“…In addition, quadrature modulation is performed by utilizing the digital signal processing in FPGA, and the intermediate frequency or RF frequency is directly output at the DAC whose output frequency is below 3 GHz (first Nyquist zone). The 1-bit BP-DSM has also been demonstrated to output single-band and concurrent multi-band at RF frequencies including 3.5 GHz [23].…”

“…1. References [49]- [52], [60]- [63] are not included since they are not implemented by CMOS or FPGA, but by offline processing. on option 8 and other LLS candidates require a complete RF layer implemented in the analog domain at each remote cell site, which increases the complexity and cost of small cells.…”

“…As a cornerstone of SDR, all-digital RF transceiver based on delta-sigma modulation has attracted intensive research interest due to its low cost and flexibility to accommodate multiband multi-RAT operations. Both transmitter [30]- [52] and receiver [53]- [59] designs have been reported, and various delta-sigma modulators, including lowpass [30], [32]- [34], [36]- [39], [41]- [45], [47], [48], bandpass [31], [35], and multiband [40], [49]- [52] have been demonstrated. To relax the FPGA speed requirement, several time-interleaving or parallel processing techniques are also presented [38], [39], [43]- [45], [47], [48].…”
