Friction and anti-wear property of aqueous symmetrical tri-block normal PEOm-PPOn-PEOm and reverse PPOn-PEOm-PPOn copolymer solutions have been studied. The study focuses on the effect of the solution bulk temperatures and the copolymer block structures. It was found that the concentration and the length of the copolymer blocks affect the solution cloud points, friction and anti-wear property. When solution was supplied at bulk temperature above their cloud point, aqueous copolymer solutions were not able to develop effective adsorbed film resulting in high friction and severe wear. When the bulk temperatures were below the cloud point, the anti-wear property improved significantly and the dynamic friction is lower than that when the temperatures were above the cloud point. This demonstrates the importance of the supply temperature of this type of lubricant in metal forming. However by adding ethyl phosphate ester to the copolymer solutions further improved friction reducing property of the solutions was observed and the friction and anti-wear property of the lubricant become insensitive to bulk temperature. In the effort to understand the lubrication mechanism of the aqueous solutions, wear tracks were studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), and the surface wetting ability via contact angle measurements. Abstract. We study the interactions between flowerlike micelles, self-assembled from telechelic associative polymers, using a molecular self-consistent field (SCF) theory and discuss the corresponding phase behavior. In these calculations we do not impose properties such as aggregation number, micellar structure and number of bridging chains. Adopting a SCF cell model, we calculate the free energy of interaction between a central micelle surrounded by others. Based on these results, we predict the binodal for coexistence of dilute and dense liquid phases, as a function of the length of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks. In the same cell model we compute the number of bridges between micelles, allowing us to predict the network transition. Ion specificity in determining physico-chemical properties of drinking water

Drinking water plays a key role in regulating the daily salt intake, thus potentially affecting (either in positive or in negative direction) the incidence of diet-related pathologies, including nephrolithiasis. Being regarded as wholesome, bottled water is increasingly preferred to tap water. However, its physico-chemical characterization, as reported on the label, is usually limited to pH and conductivity measurements, along with ion content. Dther parameters, which also are likely to influence the processes in which water is involved in the body, are usually neglected. On this work, the surface tension and density of tap water and two bottled mineral waters produced in Otaly are investigated. These parameters are critically determined by the ion content. Density is connected to the total ion amount, while surface tension is differentially affected by the presence of specific ionsI: sulfate increases its value, while bicarbonate keeps it almost constant. These results furnish a reliable scientific basis for future investigation on the connection between the physico-chemical properties of drinking water and its effect on health. Particularly, since interfacial phenomena play a key role in kidney stone formation, our results suggest that dietary enrichment of selected ions due to water intake could affect nephrolithiasis.
