Interaction modulation in a long-lived Bose-Einstein condensate by rf coupling

Abstract: We demonstrate modulation of the effective interaction between the magnetic sublevels of the hyperfine spin F = 1 in a 87 Rb Bose-Einstein condensate by Rabi coupling with radio-frequency (rf) field. The use of the F = 1 manifold enables us to observe the long-term evolution of the system owing to the absence of inelastic collisional losses. We observe that the evolution of the density distribution reflects the change in the effective interaction between atoms due to rf coupling. We also realize a miscibility-… Show more

“…Motivated by the experiment reported in Ref. [13], in the present paper we theoretically investigate Faraday-pattern formation in a coherently-coupled twocomponent BEC. Based on the oscillation of the effective interaction due to the Rabi oscillation, Faraday patterns are shown to be excited without any modulation of external parameters.…”

“…Recently, a coherently-coupled BEC of the hyperfine states |F = 1, m 1 and |F = 1, m 2 of 87 Rb atoms was experimentally investigated [13], where F is the hyperfine spin and m 1,2 = 0, ±1 are the magnetic quantum numbers. Since F = 1 is the lowest-energy hyperfine spin, stable Rabi oscillation over a long duration was realized with precise control of the coupling field.…”

“…This scenario can emerge, e.g. in the presence of integrability [54][55][56][57], disorder [40,47] or many-body scars [58][59][60] or at large drive frequencies when a 'prethermal' state emerges on intermediate time scales [61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80]. Another option, which is the one we investigate here, is to append a dissipation mechanism to the system.…”
