Interaction of Novel Ionic Liquids with Soils

Abstract: With the constant development of new ionic liquids, the understanding of the chemical fate of these compounds also needs to be updated. To this effect, the interaction of a number of novel ionic liquids with soils was determined. Therefore, three novel headgroups (ammonium, phosphonium, or pyrrolidinium) with single or quaternary substitution were tested on a variety of soils with high-to-low organic matter content and high-to-low cation exchange capacity, thereby trying to capture the full range of possible s… Show more

“…However, there are papers [23], which show that the toxicity of ionic liquids -imidazolium bromide for barley seedlings, can increase along with elongation of the substituent from 4 to 10 carbon atoms. Different conclusions between studies, can be associated with the type of soil used in the experiments and may especially result from the content of soil colloids, which may bind ionic liquids making them less available to plants and consequently non-toxic [21,24,25].…”

“…The possibilities of anion and cation combinations in ionic liquid syntheses are virtually unlimited, reaching a value of 10 18 . According to the literature, more than 50 000 ionic liquid reports, including 7000 patents, have been published to date.…”

“…failures or transport disasters. Matzke et al [14], Studzi nska et al [12], and Mrozika et al [18] showed that the soil colloids efficiently retain imidazolium and pyridinium cations, thus decreasing their mobility in soil. Soil is not only a natural plant nutrient storage but also a natural dustbin [14].…”
