Interaction of quality of life, mood and depression of patients and their informal caregivers after surgical treatment of high-grade glioma: a prospective study

Abstract: For a more comprehensive understanding of patient-caregiver interactions, we recommend using a combination of standardized psychometric tests and a semi-structured interview. The high percentage of emotional strain and depression found in patients and their caregivers facing HGG highlights the necessity of methodical screening for warning signs and consequent initiation of psycho-oncological interventions.

There were 12 cross‐sectional observational, 5,10,30,32,34,35,39‐42,44‐46,48 6 longitudinal, 5,31,36,39,43,49 2 mixed methods, 30,47 2 qualitative, 33,40 and 1 retrospective study 50 . “…One of the most important findings of the regression model is that different caregivers can significantly impact symptom burden. Previous studies suggested the occurrence of complex relationships between caregivers and care recipients [22]. Uncertain prognosis and heavy care burden cause psychological distress (anxiety, helplessness, and depression) and physical problems (fatigue and nausea) in caregivers [23,24].…”

“…The detrimental effects of HGG extend to caregivers as well [ 28 , 29 ]. The success of caregiver coping strategies may be associated with the patient’s quality of life as well as their own, such that support of the caregiver is also support of the patient [ 30 ].…”
