Dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) in the process waters of paper machine systems can interfere with the retention of fine particles, retard the drainage of water from the wet web, and generally hurt the intended functions of various polyelectrolytes that are added to the process. This review considers publications that have attempted to characterize the nature and effects of different DCS fractions, in addition to some of the ways that paper technologists have attempted to overcome related problems. The consequences of DCS in a paper machine system can be traced to their ability to form complexes with various polyelectrolytes. Such tendencies can be understood based on a relatively strong complexing ability of multivalent materials, depending on the macromolecular size and charge density. Continuing research is needed to more fully understand the different contributions to cationic demand in various paper machine systems and to find more efficient means of dealing with DCS.

Within the pulp and paper industry, the recycling of whitewater to reduce fresh water consumption and effluent volume leads to an accumulation of dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) in the papermaking wet-end system. DCS interacts with certain electrolytes and polyelectrolytes to form non-ionic DCS interferents (pitch deposits and depositions), which adversely affect papermaking. Polyethyleneimine (PEI), a fixing agent with a low molecular weight and high cationic charge density, can control the DCS in the wet-end system. The fixation efficiency of DCS simulacra and the wet-end properties were explored under varying Ca 2+ and PEI concentrations in pulp. The fixation and retention efficiency of DCS simulacra were improved, the zeta potential of pulp and drainage rate of pulp increased, and the cationic demand of pulp filtrate decreased with increasing PEI dosage. Ca 2+ shielded the negatively charged ions on the surface of the fibers and DCS simulacra, influenced the fixation efficiency of PEI to DCS simulacra, and improved the drainage rate of pulp.

Microgel assembly as void-forming bioinks in 3D bioprinting has evidenced recent success with a highlighted scaffolding performance of these bottom-up biomaterial systems in supporting the viability and function of the laden cells. Here, a ternary-component aqueous emulsion is established as a one-step strategy to integrate the methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) microgel fabrication and assembly through vat photopolymerization in situ using digital light processing (DLP)-based bioprinting. The as-proposed aqueous emulsion is featured with the partitioning of a secondary photo-crosslinkable polysaccharide, methacrylated galactoglucomannan (GGMMA) derived from plant source in both the dispersed phase of GelMA droplets and the continuous phase of dextran (Dex). As an emulgator, GGMMA renders enhanced stability of the aqueous emulsion bioresins. Strategically, the photo-crosslinkable GGMMA adheres the GelMA microgels that are conveniently converted from emulsion droplets to form hydrogel construct in layer-by-layer curing to accommodate the laden cells directly mixed in the aqueous emulsion. The spatially interconnected void space left by the removal of Dex benefits the cell growth under the guidance of the microgel surface and supports cell colonization within the macroscopic porous hydrogel. This work amends a low-concentration and cost-effective bioresin that is highly applicable for facilely fabricating microgel assembly as a porous hydrogel construct in DLP-based bioprinting.
