Interactions between leaf pubescence genes in bread wheat as assessed by high throughput phenotyping

Abstract: Leaves of many angiosperm species develop trichomes. These epidermal outgrowths have been exploited to the study the determination of cell fate, plant cell differentiation mechanisms and cell morphogenesis in the model plant species. It was found that even simple shape trichomes (leaf hairs) offer protection against both biotic and abiotic stress factors. Currently, in monocotyledonous plants, the genetic basis of leaf hair formation is poorly understood. This study sought to establish the genetic control of l… Show more

“…The hexaploid Triticum aestivum L. cultivars Saratovskaya 29 (S29, a resistant cultivar) and Yanetzkis Probat (YP, a susceptible cultivar) (Doroshkov, Pshenichnikova & Afonnikov, 2011;Doroshkov et al, 2016) were subjected to transcriptome analyses upon the standard, water deficiency (WD) and low-temperature conditions. Germinated seeds for both cultivars were planted in plastic containers with drainage (PET, size 56 × 39 × 28 cm) filled with expanded clay balls.…”

“…In line i: S29 Hl2 aesp with gene introgression from Ae. speltoides, the density of trichomes on different sides of the leaf and under different conditions in creased 1.08-1.17 times, and the length of trichomes increased 1.6 times compared to the recipient (Doroshkov et al, 2016;Pshenichnikova et al, 2019). The lines are a convenient model for studying the role that pubescence genes play in wheat stress tolerance.…”

“…The line i: S29 hl1, hl3 has a poor pubescence, while the leaves of the second line were densely pubescent. The origin, genetic characteristics and the quantitative charac teristics of the pubescence in leaves of the nearisogenic lines have been described in detail earlier (Doroshkov et al, 2016;Pshenichnikova et al, 2019).…”

“…S29 possesses an increased tolerance to stress conditions and the cv. YP, on the contrary, is less tolerant (Doroshkov, Pshenichnikova & Afonnikov, 2011; Doroshkov et al, 2016). Therefore, this pair of genotypes was chosen to study stress-induced changes in the expression of the AOS genes in plant leaves.…”
