Intercity Person Trip Tables for Nationwide Transportation Planning in Israel Obtained from Massive Cell Phone Data

Abstract: A national transportation planning model is needed for several reasons, including heavy investments in transportation infrastructures and the need to perform formal cost–benefit analyses of all medium- and large-scale transport projects. The paper describes the formulation and development of the planning model. The model is unique for the data collected and is used for analyzing nationwide travel. After careful legal review regarding privacy laws, cellular phone (CP) data were obtained for sixteen 1-week sampl… Show more

“…Such penetration enables a comprehensive study of travel behavior that is based on the mobility patterns of randomly selected mobile phones in the Israeli transportation system. This data was shown in Bekhor et al (2011) and (Gur et al, 2009) to provide a high quality coverage of the network, tracking 94% of the trips (defined as at least 2 km in urban areas, and at least 10 km in rural areas). The resulting data contained a wealth of traffic properties for a network of over 6,000 nodes, and 15,000 directed links.…”

“…An evaluation of the utility to the economy from diversions of container-carrying trucks to nighttime deliveries was calculated using a national traffic simulation conducted in the framework of the National Demand Model used by Israel's Ministry of Transport (Bekhor et al, 2013;Gur et al, 2010). The simulation replicates the reduction in truck traffic to and from the port at three periods of the day.…”

“…Most of the processing procedures for the various data aggregations and disaggregations are based on proprietary data mining techniques, and independent validation studies have not been completed. Several research studies have been completed with positive, though cautionary, reviews (Asakura and Hato 2004;Ratti et al 2006;Gur et al 2009;Ma et al 2012). The data that can be purchased have been processed using private and patented algorithms that are not likely to be released.…”
