Interdisciplinarity in Data Analysis Through the Primary School Textbooks in Greece and Singapore

Abstract: Data analysis is one of the most popular fields of mathematics and includes statistics and probability. These two mathematical domains are some of the most well-known, influencing everyday life and the various sciences. Their teaching lays the foundation for primary education and culminates in secondary education. Probability and statistics are necessary for today and the future of several professions. This research attempts to highlight the multidisciplinary character of these two disciplines through the text… Show more

“…Because these teachers predominantly relied on textbooks instead of enhancing the learning experience, there was minimal focus on encouraging students to delve deeper into their understanding or explore conceptual meanings, such as reading to solidify or investigate theoretical knowledge of data analysis. Another textbook analysis study between Greece and Singapore conducted by Zorzos and Avgerinos (2022), examined variations in the multidisciplinary approach within the exercises found in those school textbooks. This study found out a need for increasing the number of exercises in Greek textbooks while the variety of frameworks in Singapore books is evident.…”

“…Each concept should be taught and learnt based on the child's age, developmental level and concept specific needs. Mathematics teachers use different instructional activites, real life examples, make students engaged in hands-on or technology-based activities, 3D and concrete materials, create mathematical tasks to cultivate students, and technology supported learning activities (e.g., Lavidas et al, 2022;Zorzos & Avgerinos, 2022) so that students can develop mathematical knowledge and learn mathematical thinking skills in an effective and efficient way. Hence, the paradigm shift adopts from teacher-centered to student-centered teaching and learning.…”

“…In overcoming the gap in education quality, there needs to be synergy and cooperation from the parties, government, education implementers, and the community in understanding the urgency of implementing good and quality education (Stracke, 2019). One alternative to improve the quality and quality of education in a country is to carry out an education model applied to developed countries, such as Singapore (Zorzos & Avgerinos, 2022). Singapore is known as one of the countries with a good education system (Kim et al, 2021) (Huang et al, 2019).…”
