When tooth enamel is exposed to ionizing radiation, radicals are formed that can be detected using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) techniques. EPR dosimetry using tooth enamel is based on the (presumed) correlation between the intensity or amplitude of some of the radiation-induced signals with the dose absorbed in the enamel. In the present paper a critical review is given of this widely applied dosimetric method.The first part of the paper is quite fundamental and deals with the main properties of tooth enamel and several of its model systems (e.g., synthetic apatites). Considerable attention is also devoted to the numerous radiation-induced and native EPR signals, and the radicals responsible for them. The relevant EPR detection, identification and spectrum analysing methods are reviewed from a general point of view. Finally, the need for solid state modelling and the linearity of the dose response are investigated.The second part is devoted to the practical implementation of EPR dosimetry using enamel. It concerns the preparation of samples, specific irradiation problems, spectrum acquisition and it is described how the dosimetric signal intensity and dose can be retrieved from the EPR spectra. Special attention is paid to the energy dependence of the EPR response and to sources of uncertainties. Results of and problems encountered in international intercomparisons and epidemiological studies are also dealt with.In the final chapter the future of EPR dosimetry with tooth enamel is analysed.

This paper presents the results of the 4th International Comparison of in vitro electron paramagnetic resonance dosimetry with tooth enamel, where the performance parameters of tooth enamel dosimetry methods were compared among sixteen laboratories from all over the world. The participating laboratories were asked to determine a calibration curve with a set of tooth enamel powder samples provided by the organizers. Nine molar teeth extracted following medical indication from German donors and collected between 1997 and 2007 were prepared and irradiated at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. Five out of six samples were irradiated at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 Gy air kerma; and one unirradiated sample was kept as control. The doses delivered to the individual samples were unknown to the participants, who were asked to measure each sample nine times, and to report the EPR signal response, the mass of aliquots measured, and the parameters of EPR signal acquisition and signal evaluation. Critical dose and detection limit were calculated by the organizers on the basis of the calibration-curve parameters obtained at every laboratory. For calibration curves obtained by measuring every calibration sample three times, the mean value of the detection limit was 205 mGy, ranging from 56 to 649 mGy. The participants were also invited to provide the signal response and the nominal dose of their current dose calibration curve (wherever available), the critical dose and detection limit of which were also calculated by the organizers..

Представлены предварительные инструментальные оценки доз облучения жителей Степно-горска (Республика Казахстан), в том числе и работников ураноперерабатывающего завода, находящегося рядом с этим городом. Их дозы облучения оценивали в сравнении с дозами облучения населения города Астана, выбранного в качестве контрольной территории. Ис-пользовали метод ЭПР-дозиметрии по образцам эмали зубов человека. Образцы зубов были получены при удалении их по медицинским показаниям. В данной работе представлены пер-вые результаты исследования. В общей сложности было проанализировано 27 образцов зубной эмали жителей Степногорска (включая работников ураноперерабатывающего заво-да). Установлено, что различие между дозами облучения образцов зубов, собранных у ра-ботников ураноперерабатывающего завода и у жителей Степногорска (не являющихся ра-ботниками этого предприятия), и дозами облучения жителей Астаны (в качестве контроля -5 человек) не является статистически значимым. У четырёх жителей Степногорска, не являю-щихся работниками предприятия, были определены относительно высокие дозы облучения. Поскольку в результате индивидуальных опросов было установлено, что эти лица не подвер-гались облучению с медицинскими целями, то возможным объяснением относительно боль-ших индивидуальных доз может быть миграция этих лиц из различных населённых пунктов Казахстана, расположенных в самой непосредственной близости от Семипалатинского ядер-ного полигона, где они могли подвергнуться дополнительному облучению. Исследование яв-ляется пилотным и будет продолжено по мере получения новых образцов эмали зубов.
