Intermolecular forces

Abstract: The generalnature ofmolecular interactions is discussed; a molecule is defined as an atom or group of atoms whose binding energy is much larger than the thermal energy kT. The interaction energy is broken down into electrostatic, induction, dispersion, resonance and overlap energies. The theory of the longrange interaction energy is developed using quantum mechanical perturbation methods, and the electrostatic, induction and dispersion energies written in terms of the free-molecule electric moments and polariz… Show more

“…Because of the inclusion of dipoles and even higher moments, the theoretical results were in significantly better agreement with the experiment in these cases [17][18][19][20][21]. The importance of the approach has mainly been recognized by molecular physics, see [22,23] and the references cited therein. However, most works were aimed at understanding the interaction between two or a small number of particles.…”

“…The z~ may even be regarded as free parameters of the system, the minimum energy of which is determined by their proper choice according to ~ER =0 (22) OZi [~K~z~=O with the condition describing the charge neutrality of the crystal. This approach offers a quantitative solution to the problem of assigning charges zi to the ions by minimizing the system's energy.…”
