In the Guatemalan highlands, distinctions between human and animal are often irrelevant to the treatment of an object as meat. I draw from my ethnographic fieldwork on eating practices in that region to suggest that if the recent social science turn to species is to be a departure from the limitations of Euro‐American humanism, it must take species not as a genealogically mappable identity but as a coherence situated amid ever‐transforming divisions and connections. Stable distinctions between human and other species are precisely what deserve to be called into question. The power of multispecies scholarship thus lies not in how it “centers the animal” but in its challenge to conventional taxonomic formulations of classification and belonging. That meat takes various, situated forms has implications for multicultural politics as well as anthropological method and inquiry.

Se rebaten aquellas perspectivas antropológicas que dan por sentado que, en estos espacios, de manera genérica y sin matices, la práctica social y las ideas no se construyen de forma vinculada al medio, cayendo bajo la creencia de que la naturaleza existe ajena a la voluntad humana. Discutiremos el ingenuo esencialismo etnológico que posiciona al naturalismo como modelo central de la cosmovisión socio-europea, el cual es caracterizado por patrones dualistas que han permitido configurar, al mismo tiempo y por contraposición a este, paradigmas monistas de relaciones socioecológicas en otras partes del mundo. PALABRAS CLAVE:Antropología; naturaleza; sociedad; epistemología; naturalismo; crítica.ABSTRACT: This article proposes the need for a theoretical review on the current epistemological assumption that establishes the dichotomy nature-society as a cornerstone of a broad worldview for western contexts. We will discuss the anthropological perspectives that assume that in these spaces, generically without nuances, social practice and ideas are not constructed in such a close relationship to the environment, falling under a belief that nature exists outside the human will. We will debate the naive ethnological essentialism that position naturalism as a central model of a socio-european worldview, characterized by dualistic patterns that have enabled monistic paradigms of socioecological relationships to be established at the same time, and in contrast to this, in other parts of the world.

The critical analysis of conservation conflicts in Protected Areas (PAs) raises interesting questions about the redefinition of human-environment relations in the current ecological crisis. In recent years these debates have unveiled that, in the attempt to define the 'proper' place of humans in nature, PAs have embodied modern dualistic worldviews, which understand nature as a realm different from society, culture and 'civilisation'. This paper suggests that the utilisation of these worldviews should be understood as part of the conceptual apparatus that enables a transition in management roles in Protected Areas, through which new empowered groups are granted the right to control and use natural resources. By analysing the practices and discourses of conservation stakeholders at the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, in southern Spain, this paper shows that modern ideas of nature are essential to the collective appropriation of Cabo de Gata by new empowered groups because these ideas justify a new way of managing local resources in accordance with their own interests and desires. This has deep implications for the study of people-park conflicts and the problems associated to the promotion of more environmentally friendly ways of mastering the environment, which must be approached in the light of the power relations associated to the appropriation of territory and natural resources. The paper also concludes that, in order to understand how the nature-society dualism still dictates the way we should relate to the environment, we must trace the practices of those who bear this worldview and unveil the strategies and mechanisms that are used.
