Internal structure and measurement invariance of the Dominic Interactive among Indigenous children in Quebec.

Abstract: This study aims to examine the reliability and validity of the French version of the Dominic Interactive screening tool (Valla, 2008) among Indigenous children in Quebec. The Dominic Interactive is a computerized screening tool, which assesses prevalent emotional and behavioral problems in children.Participants in this study were 195 Innu Nation children aged between 8 and 11 years. Statistical analyses were performed on each of the 7 scales of the Dominic Interactive to assess reliability, factor structure, a… Show more

“…The authors acknowledged the limitations of relying on coefficient alpha as the sole estimate of internal consistency, per Cho and Kim (2015) discussion of the misconceptions of alpha as an estimate of reliability. In a second exemplar citing Cho and Kim (2015), Garneau et al (2020) (a) provide support that their items measure a single factor, (b) demonstrate that the test items are essentially tau-equivalent in statistical similarity, and (c) report that the error scores of the items are uncorrelated prior to estimating alpha. The authors also refer to alpha as the lower-bound estimate of reliability when reporting.…”

“…One such self-report method, the video-based Dominic Interactive (DI), has been validated and successfully employed in surveys of primary school children 6 to 12 years of age in French communities, English communities, and indigenous communities in Canada (17)(18)(19), and in the United States and Brazil (20), France (21), Spain (22), the Netherlands (23), and in European multi-country projects (24). The DI video assesses children's mental health symptoms by eliciting their responses to depictions of cartoon-like situations on a computer, tablet, or cell phone.…”
