International Winter Wheat Improvement Program: history, activities, impact and future

Abstract: International Winter Wheat Improvement Program (IWWIP) was established in 1986 between the Government of Turkey and CIMMYT with three main objectives: (1) develop winter/facultative germplasm for Central and West Asia, (2) facilitate global winter wheat germplasm exchange, and (3) training wheat scientists. ICARDA joined the program in 1991 making it a threeway partnership that continues to work effectively. The germplasm developed by IWWIP as well as the winter wheat cultivars and lines received from global c… Show more

“…Two wheat groups (WW and SW) were planted simultaneously in a single trial and subjected to the same agronomic practices. Thus, the level of change in the GY and related traits of WW genotypes was determined by comparing SW genotypes (as a control treatment) [33,42]. For example, the relative difference in the GY of WW genotypes was calculated with the following Equation (2):…”

“…What is suggested here has been implemented for many years. The improvement strategy of the IWWIP program coordinated by CIMMYT-ICARDA-Turkey has been built on the principle we mentioned [33]. The IWWIP program creates WW × SW crossing combinations to expand the WW adaptation boundaries and makes simultaneous selections over the multienvironment trials conducted in SWZ, WWZ, and facultative wheat zone (FWZ) of Turkey.…”

“…Since independence in 1991, several wheat breeding and research programs with clear focus on yield potential under irrigation were established in Andijan, Tashkent, Karshi and other regions. International cooperation with CIMMYT and ICARDA has made an important contribution resulting in development and adoption of new winter wheat cultivars (Morgounov et al 2019).…”
