Interoperability and interchangeability considerations in microgrids employing IEC61850 standard

Abstract: Due to the recent changes in electrical networks, microgrid operation schemes have evolved dramatically. Coupled with smartgrid concepts, microgrids are required to be more intelligent and establish communication with its components. In order to sustain reliable and sustainable power delivery under heavy deployments of Distributed Generators (DGs), passive power network operation schemes have to be replaced with new generation dynamic methods. Utilization of communication in microgrids brings about new challen… Show more

“…It integrates different functions in a substation into a single protocol. Besides interoperability among multi-vendor substation intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), it also offers seamless communication, lower configuration and installation cost [2]. Logical nodes and data sets define substation communication equipment based on Substation Configuration Description (SCD) files.…”

“…Storage system employed in this scenario can be any of the ESS discussed in this paper. Standardized approach to control and communication has the benefit of interoperability and interchangeability, where different technologies from different manufacturers can be seamlessly integrated [218]. Accordingly, it is possible to use EVs and stationary battery storage systems as well as more innovative systems such as graphite or paper batteries.…”

“…Similarly, the edges in graph G are mapped to the connections in electrical network. As an example, the electrical network shown in Figure 3b can be represented by a graph as shown in Figure 4 [6]. Proposed Solution: Any change in the electrical network maps to either addition of a new node in the graph, or a loss of an existing edge.…”
