Interpretation of the optical absorption spectrum and of the paramagnetic susceptibility of NdAlO3

Abstract: The absorption spectrum of pure rhombohedral NdAlO3 was determined at 4.2 K from 10 000 to 34 000 cm−1. Adding the levels determined for the 4I multiplet by other authors, a total of 117 Stark levels was obtained. They were fitted to a mean square deviation of 13 cm−1 with a Hamiltonian involving 12 free atom parameters and six D3 crystal field parameters applied on the 364 kets basis in the 4f3 configuration. The values are B02=−481 cm−1, B04 =481 cm−1, B34=−390 cm−1, B06=−1700 cm−1, B36=−950 cm−1, B66=−1080 … Show more

“…These results, obtained by applying the im proved RSPET formulation to U*(LnO1.5, cub) and U*(LnF3, rhm), are consistent with the nephelauxetic series of Ln3+ previously proposed on the basis of the spectroscopic data of elec tronic energy levels of various Ln3" compounds (Jorgensen, 1962(Jorgensen, , 1979Wong et al, 1963;Caro et al, 1981). In particular, Caro et al (1981Caro et al ( , 1979Caro et al ( , 1977 and Antic-Fidancev et al . (1980) reported careful spectroscopic analyses of the electronic energy levels of several Nd31 com pounds including the trifluoride and sesquiox ide.…”

“…1 is given a whole spectrum from 300 to 600 nm. Contrary to the data reported on NdAlO 3 [8] in our samples the very intense absorption band is observed starting at 350 nm. This band disturbs the observation of the higher lying electronic levels.…”

“…The measured bands are characteristics of Nd 3+ ground state ( 4 I 9/2 ) to excited state multiplet manifold transitions, as one can observe in the energy-level Table 2. list of Table 3. The attributions of the electronic transitions in the UV-vis spectrum followed those defined by previous studies [27][28][29]. Therefore, one can conclude that the Raman scattering efficiency may increase dramatically when the samples are excited with an incident radiation, whose photon energy is close to an electronic transition of the crystal fiber.…”
