“…Negative effects of mercury on reproductive traits in male rats include impairment of spermatogenesis, decrease in spermatozoa motility, and increase in pathological changes [ 171 , 172 , 173 , 174 , 175 , 176 , 177 ].…”

“…Testicular toxicity of mercury chloride (HgCl 2 ) in adult male Wistar rats was reported [ 174 ]. In the mercury-exposed group (40 mg/kg bw; HgCl 2 ; orally daily; 28 days), histological profiles of the testes showed a derangement of the cytoarchitecture and deterioration of spermatozoa quality.…”

“…Previous studies have shown that 40 mg/kg of HgCl 2 -treatment decreased sperm motility, while the 40 mg/kg of HgCl 2 and 500 mg/kg of Solanum melongena (SM) treatments were able to increase sperm motility again. Through an antioxidant system of actions, SM improves spermatogenesis and reduces HgCl 2 -induced testicular toxicity [51]. Short-term exposure to HgCl 2 , even at 0.031 g/mL, was found to have adverse effects on sperm functions, generate spontaneous acrosome response, and inhibit capacitation via blocking tyrosine-containing protein phosphorylation.…”
