Intervertebral disc replacement for cervical degenerative disease – clinical results and functional outcome at two years in patients implanted with the Bryan® cervical disc prosthesis

Abstract: Implantation of the Bryan disc resulted in excellent or good neurological outcome in all patients. The surgical technique was safe and without complications. Twelve percent of the implanted Bryan discs lost mobility at two years, mainly due to HO. A trend was seen towards development of HO in the operated segments. Further investigations with longer follow-up periods and with a control group (e.g. fusion with intervertebral cage) will be necessary for a definitive assessment of the long-term functionality and … Show more

“…We would like to suggest an increase in the area of TPS and HA layers at each endplate of the Discover disc. HO was found in ten cases of Grade I or II (18.2 %) at the last follow-up, and its incidence was obviously less than in other studies [20][21][22]. Because the contribution of sagittal balance to operative and adjacent segmental longevity is likely to be more important than preservation of ROM [15], artificial cervical Fig.…”

“…This is reconfirmed by recent studies that compare outcomes of fusions and clinical results after prosthesis implantations. 17 The cervical spine disc prosthesis also shows good results, short-and medium-term, in cases with pre-existing defects of the spinal cord. This is reconfirmed by our study.…”

“…Nossos resultados foram semelhantes ao de diversos estudos multicêntricos atuais. Alguns desses utilizaram a artrodese anterior após dissectomia como grupo controle e que os resultados da artroplastia em curto prazo foram iguais ou até superiores ao da artrodese [20][21][22][23][24] . Os índices de complicações, segundo eles, foram em média mais frequentes na artroplastia, no entanto foram mais graves na artrodese (lesão medular, pseudoartrose e outros) 25 .…”
