Intestinal carcinomas in two tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis, Saguinus oedipus) of the German Primate Centre

Abstract: SummaryTwo colonic mucoid adenocarcinomas in tamarins from the German Primate Centre are reported. A mucinous mucoid adenocarcinoma occurred in the ascending and transversal colon of a Saguinus oedipus male more than 8 years old, with metastases in the regional lymph nodes and the pancreas. The tumour corresponded to colon cancer in cotton-topped tamarins of other colonies. The second tumour, a well differentiated tubular mucoid adenocarcinoma, developed at the i1eocaecal valve of a 141/2 year old Saguinus jus… Show more

“…Adenocarcinomas of the small bowel and colon have been described in several species although the highest incidence of colonic neoplasia has been reported in the cottontop tamarin and the rhesus macaque (DePaoli and McClure, 1982;Brack, 1988). Small intestinal adenocarcinomas have rarely been recorded in common marmosets both in the proximal and mid-jejunum (Chalifoux, 1990;Brack, 1998a;Miller et al, 2010) and there is a single report of a Brunner's gland adenocarcinoma in a baboon (Tsai and Giddens, 1983).…”

“…Rare cases of adenocarcinoma of the small intestine have also been recorded in the rhesus macaque (Fanton et al, 1984). Adenocarcinoma of the ileum has been recorded in the saddle backed tamarin (Brack, 1988(Brack, , 1998a. Intestinal stromal tumors have also been rarely recognized in the small intestine and have been causally linked to infection with retroperitoneal fibromatosis herpesvirus (Bielefeldt-Ohmann et al, 2005).…”

“…By contrast, tamarins are not used as commonly as marmosets, partially because of the presence of less‐established breeding colonies and declining wild populations. However, tamarins have played key research roles in vaccine trails, colon cancer, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and Crohn’s disease [4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14, 18, 19, 23, 27, 32, 33, 39]. Tamarins reach maturity at approximately 16 months of age [3].…”

“…Neoplastic diseases affecting saddleback tamarins have been rarely reported. Among them, intestinal mucinous adenocarcinoma and adrenal cortical epithelial cysts have been diagnosed.…”
