Spontaneous pathology of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) and tamarins (Saguinus oedipus, Saguinus mystax)

Abstract: Background Marmosets and tamarins are increasingly used in research, but their pathology remains poorly defined compared to old world primates. Methods Necropsy records of 129 marmosets and 52 tamarins were reviewed; none were used experimentally. Results The most common marmoset lesions were dehydration, emaciation, nephritis, colitis and inanition. The most common tamarin lesions were dehydration, ascites, emaciation and congestive heart failure. Colitis and heart disease were the most common cause of de… Show more

“…Over the course of several years, complete necropsies were performed on 46 marmosets originating from this colony. The spectrum of spontaneous pathology documented was similar to that reported in the literature for common marmosets (Chalmers et al, 1983;David et al, 2009;Kaspareit et al, 2006;Ludlage et al, 2005) Abbreviations: EHS, enterohepatic Helicobacter species; IBD, inflammatory bowel disease.…”

“…However, diseases like myocardial fibrosis, chronic myocarditis and ventricle dilatation have been reported previously for captive individuals of C. jacchus [4,7,16,24]. To understand these and other heart pathologies, i.e., related to toxicological studies [5], it is critical to establish normal characteristics and morphological data.…”

“…While several background lesions and spontaneous tumors have been published in common marmosets, the varieties of the lesion are relatively limited when compared to those in rodents (Betton 1984;Kaspareit et al 2006;David, Dick, and Hubbard 2009). Here, we encountered a spontaneous lesion considered to be an inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) in the duodenum of a common marmoset.…”

“…The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a popular experimental animal bred in well-established colonies, small in size, with relatively rapid generational turnover, is abundant in the wild, and has low zoonotic risk (Abbott et al 2003;David, Dick, and Hubbard 2009;Tardif et al 2006). While several background lesions and spontaneous tumors have been published in common marmosets, the varieties of the lesion are relatively limited when compared to those in rodents (Betton 1984;Kaspareit et al 2006;David, Dick, and Hubbard 2009).…”
