Intracytoplasmic sperm injection: An assisted reproductive technique and its outcome to overcome infertility

Abstract: This review focuses on the outcome, merits and demerits of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for treatment of male factor infertility. Spermatozoa of infertile men are surgically retrieved from the epididymis or testis. Fertilisation and pregnancy rates after ICSI are found to be around 66% and 48%, respectively, with surgically retrieved spermatozoa. Major contributing factors to failed fertilisation after ICSI are the number of metaphase II oocytes retrieved and availability of viable spermatozoa for i… Show more

“…With the application of in vitro fertilization (IVF), abnormalities in the process of fertilization can be evaluated. In most of the patients with defects in sperm‐egg fusion, fertilization failure can be rescued by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) . However, there are still some affected individuals suffering from recurrent fertilization failure even after ICSI attempts and even though morphologically normal oocytes and sperm can be retrieved …”

“…With the development of micromanipulation, ICSI has rapidly become an important treatment choice for male infertility (Sarkar, ). Despite the high success rate of ICSI, the potential risks of this treatment are still being evaluated.…”

“…Compared with conventional in-vitro fertilization (IVF), ICSI greatly reduces the requirements for sperm quantity, motility, and fertilization ability. With the development of micromanipulation, ICSI has become an important part of assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) for the treatment of cases with male factor infertility (Sarkar, 2007). With ICSI, an egg can be fertilized not only with fresh sperm with mild or moderate abnormalities but also with sperm following a frozen-thawed procedure, sperm of a severely or extremely severely abnormal concentration, motility or morphology, or even sperm that have been surgically retrieved from the epididymis or testis (van Steirteghem et al, 1993;Devroey et al, 1994;Redgment et al, 1994;Tournaye et al, 1994;Chen et al, 1996).…”
