Intrafollicular iron and ferritin in women with ovarian endometriomas

Abstract: Iron may diffuse from ovarian endometriomas into the adjacent ovarian tissue. However, this phenomenon does not appear to markedly affect ovarian function. Some effective biological mechanisms such as ferritin storage may effectively sequester free iron, so limiting its detrimental effects.

“…Additionally, iron and DNA adducts are increased in follicular fluid of endometriosis patients compared to infertile controls (Singh et al, 2013; Da Broi et al, 2016). Iron and transcript levels of ferritin and transferrin receptor were increased in follicles close to an endometrioma (characterized by elevated iron levels (Yamaguchi et al, 2008)) affecting oocyte retrieval (Sanchez et al, 2014) although another study did not identify any differences in iron content or ferritin levels (Benaglia et al, 2015). Exposure of fallopian epithelium to follicular fluid leads to a small increase in cell proliferation along with IL-8 cytokine levels (Bahar-Shany et al, 2014).…”

“…Iron and transcript levels of ferritin and transferrin receptors were increased in follicles settled nearby to an endometrioid ovarian cyst affecting oocyte maturation [84]. Nevertheless another study did not find any differences in iron or ferritin contents [85]. Small increases in cell proliferation and in IL-8 cytokine levels are observed after contact with fallopian epithelium and follicular fluids [86].…”
