Intraindividual comparative analysis of capsule opacification after implantation of 2 single-piece hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses models: Three-year follow-up

Abstract: Both IOLs had similarly low PCO rates 3 years postoperatively, although more ACO and capsule retraction were observed in eyes with the interrupted optic edge IOL.

“…; Kahraman et al. ). This study confirms previous findings, with similar and low PCO development but with more ACO with the AcrySof ® material, and it extends the relevance also to the SN60WF IOL type, with its aspherical design.…”

“…The IOL material influences the PCO changes after cataract surgery and can affect the behaviour of LECs. 8,14 The exact mechanism is unknown but could be explained by either mechanical or material related effects.…”

“…6 The intraocular lenses have a role in preventing and promoting posterior capsular changes. 7,8 Lens epithelial cells (LECs) transdifferentiate to myofibroblastic cells, producing collagen fibres around the anterior capsulotomy margins. 1 These fibres cause the anterior capsulotomy margin to adhere to the posterior capsule to form a closed space in which LECs differentiate into lens fibre cells.…”

“…The AMO Tecnis ZCB00 (Santa Ana, CA, USA) has been shown to have low posterior capsule opacification rates due to its hydrophobic square-edged design, 1 and its use is established in adult MICS. The Tecnis PCB00 is the same acrylic IOL, but packaged in a preloaded injection device allowing insertion through wounds of 2.2-2.4 mm.…”
