Intraindividual comparison of 1,470 nm diode laser versus carbon dioxide laser for tonsillotomy: A prospective, randomized, double blind, controlled feasibility trial

Abstract: A fiber-guided 1,470 nm diode laser system offers an efficient and safe method for tonsillotomy as treatment of obstructive tonsillar hypertrophy. Compared to our standard practice (carbon dioxide laser), 1,470 nm laser application provides comparable tissue ablation effects with less intraoperative bleeding and shorter operation time.

“…PTH may have been reported as primary (generally defined as occurring within 24 hours of surgery), secondary (generally defined as occurring more than 24 hours postoperatively), or at an undefined or unspecified time. 8–108 Seventy-three studies contributed data to the meta-analysis (66 RCTs, 19,20,23,25,27,29,33,34,36,3841,43,44,46,47,49,50,5259,6264,67,71,72,7479,8184,88–92,95,101–105,108–122 6 nonrandomized trials, 24,35,37,45,48,94 and 1 prospective cohort study 70 ). The resulting subset of studies included the following tonsillectomy techniques: cold dissection, electrocautery, coblation, harmonic scalpel, laser, molecular resonance, thermal welding, and microdebrider.…”

“…Several other studies have also shown that lowpower laser irradiation has a positive therapeutic effect in a number of clinical situations (Havel et al 2012)e.g., pain relief (Fonseca et al 2012), wound healing (Kirkby et al 2012), and sports medicine (Wheeland 2012). This effect occurs through a mechanism involving acceleration of cell division, increased enzyme activity, collagen production (Calatrava et al 1997), regulation of mitochondrial processes (Karu 2008;Eells et al 2004;Prusa et al 2012), increased expression of certain proteins (Ozog et al 2012), induced synthesis of cell cycle regulatory proteins (Ocanã-Quero et al 1998a) and increase ATP production (Kirkby et al 2012;Karu 2010;Gavish et al 2004).…”
