Intralesional injection of platelet-rich plasma followed by controlled exercise for treatment of midbody suspensory ligament desmitis in Standardbred racehorses

Abstract: Results suggested that horses with moderate to severe MSD treated by means of intralesional injection of a single dose of PRP followed by a program of gradually increased exercise had an excellent prognosis for returning to racing.

“…The stress at failure (s max ) was calculated [s max ¼ F max /cross-sectional area (N/mm 2 ¼ MPa)] and the modulus of elasticity (EM), was deduced from the slope of the linear part of the curve. 12 Results of the two slices were averaged.…”

“…PRP has been used successfully in maxillofacial surgery to accelerate soft tissue and bone healing, 7 and is currently under investigation for a possible role in regeneration of tendons. 8,9 PRP treatment of tendon disorders appeared to be effective in human and equine patients, [10][11][12] and studies using laboratory animals or in vitro methods have elucidated some of the working mechanisms. 8,9,13,14 Platelets are known to play a crucial role in the cascade of tissue healing by delivering growth factors to the site of injury.…”

“…The first clinical application of platelet rich plasma (PRP) was published by Marx et al (1998) in the supportive treatment of mandibular defects in humans with bony implants. More recently, PRP was used in human and equine sport medicine for therapy defects in ligaments and tendons (Mishra and Pavelko 2006;Arguelles et al 2008;Waselau et al 2008). A great advantage of autologous PRP therapy is the lack of immunological response in the treated organism (Kajikawa et al 2008).…”

“…Além disso, todos os animais retornaram ao nível esportivo anterior à lesão e não apresentaram recidivas até 20 meses após. Waselau et al (2008) Rindermann et al (2010) conduziram um estudo com seis equinos que apresentavam variados graus de tendinite, porém sem um grupo controle. Os resultados ultrassonográficos revelaram diminuição no percentual de área lesada, na área seccional total do tendão, melhora no grau de ecogenicidade e no alinhamento das fibras.…”
