Intramuscular Fat Selection in Rabbits Modifies the Fatty Acid Composition of Muscle and Liver Tissues

Abstract: This study was conducted on two rabbit lines divergently selected for intramuscular fat (IMF) content in the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle. The aim was to estimate the direct response to selection for IMF after 10 generations, and the correlated responses in carcass quality traits, meat fatty acid content, liver fat and its fatty acid content, and in plasma metabolic markers related to liver metabolism. Selection for IMF content was successful, showing a direct response equivalent to 3.8 SD of … Show more

“…The glycolytic and energy metabolism was also affected by selection. No differences were found between the lines in the plasma glucose concentration neither in previous 22,2 > nor in this experiment. However, greater abundances of metabolites involved in the amino sugar metabolism (0.68 to 1.30 SD, P 0 ≥ 0.99), the fructose, mannose and galactose metabolism (0.54 to 1.77 SD, P 0 ≥ 0.97), and the pentose metabolism (0.53 SD, P 0 = 0.96) were found in the plasma of the L line.…”

“…The differences in cholesterol and bile acids was also observed in the plasma of the L line on the 10th generation of selection 2 >. Additionally, previous experiments also found greater amount of triglycerides in the plasma of the L line 22,23 .…”

“…Each sire was mated with five dams, and, in order to minimize the inbreeding, only one male offspring of the sire from the highest-ranking mating was selected for breeding the next generation. Further information on the divergent selection experiment can be found in previous publications [15,16]. The present study was carried out with data from 1982 rabbits, 166 of which were from the base population, 874 from the High-IMF line (H) and 942 from the Low-IMF line (L).…”
