Intrapericardial Ectopic Thyroid Carcinoma in a Cat

Abstract: Abstract. A 7-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair feline presented with tachycardia and was later euthanized due to a declining condition. On gross examination, the thoracic cavity contained an expansile, multiloculated mass that displaced the lungs dorsocaudally. The mass, within the pericardial sac, compressed adjacent myocardium. Cut surface revealed variably sized, fluid-filled spaces with multiple foci of hemorrhage and necrosis. Histologically, the mass was composed of solid foci of polygonal cells… Show more

“…[8][9][10] Reports of non-lymphomatous pericardial neoplasms include intrapericardial ectopic thyroid carcinoma, primary cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma, chemodectoma, mesothelioma, primary and metastatic hemangiosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, multiple myeloma, carcinoid carcinomatosis, aortic body carcinoma, multiple metastatic carcinoma and primary myocardial sarcoma. 5,6,8,[11][12][13] Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), previously referred to as malignant fibrous histiocytoma, is a mesenchymal neoplasm that has been well documented in human medicine. Tumors classified as UPS have a pleomorphic spindle cell population and are characterized by the absence of an identifiable line of differentiation either morphologically or immunohistochemically.…”

“…In addition, as the embryology of C‐cells differs from that of the thyroid follicular cell, it cannot be expected that C‐cells would also migrate to ectopic sites . In support of that, ectopic thyroid tissue characteristically shows negative immunostaining for calcitonin, and medullary thyroid tumors arising in ectopic sites have not been described in dogs . Similarly, in human patients, only a single case report of medullary carcinoma arising in an ectopic site has been reported, although ectopic thyroid disease is not uncommon, with over 500 reported cases described …”
