Intraperitoneal Administration of Oxygen/Ozone to Rats Reduces the Pancreatic Damage Induced by Streptozotocin

Abstract: Background: The rat model of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced pancreatic damage was used to examine whether a systemic oxygen/ozone mixture could be beneficial for the pancreas by reducing the machinery of the local detrimental mediators released by STZ. Results: The results showed that oxygen/ozone administration (150 µg/Kg i.p.) for ten days in STZ rats increased the endogenous glutathione-s-transferase (GST) enzyme and nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) into the pancreatic tissue, together with … Show more

“…The increment in Nrf2 was in line with the significant reduction in 61 % of the level of the pro inflammatory cytokine IL-1β in ME-treated patients compared with basal levels, even IL-1β levels in ME remain 94 % higher than values in normal subjects. An imbalance between Nrf2/NF-κB has been proposed in other diseases like diabetic neuropathy [68] in which ozone experimentally demonstrated its efficacy equilibrating this disruption [62]. Similar trends were found in viral diseases, NF-κB pathways can support influenza A virus infection and promote pneumonia.…”

“…In addition, H 2 O 2 can act as promotor of the Nrf2 pathway. The important role of Nrf2 induction by ozone in order to enhance the antioxidant systems has been described recently [31][32][33].…”

“…Based on this rationale, in this review we present wide scientific background indicating how a natural bioactive molecule with antioxidant property such as the ozone (O 3 ) can be indicated as a potential new strategy to delay neurodegeneration. This hypothesis is based on the widely demonstrated evidence regarding the interaction between O 3 and Nrf2 ( Galie et al, 2018 , Siniscalco et al, 2018 , Re et al, 2014 , Vaillant et al, 2013 ). We first describe the relevant, well known and documented molecular mechanisms related to antioxidant/anti-apoptotic/pro-autophagy processes targeted by the O 3 administration via Nrf2 biological pathway.…”
