Introducing ADELE: a personalized intelligent companion

Abstract: This paper introduces ADELE, a Personalized Intelligent Companion designed to engage with users through spoken dialog to help them explore topics of interest. The system will maintain a user model of information consumption habits and preferences in order to (1) personalize the user's experience for ongoing interactions, and (2) build the user-machine relationship to model that of a friendly companion. The paper details the overall research goal, existing progress, the current focus, and the long term plan for… Show more

“…It may be argued that this is because of truly natural aspects of dialogue not being implemented appropriately or at all in the types of devices currently available. Especially in terms of interpersonal connections and conversational interaction, current projects are exploring how to include this in speech interface design [18,23,43,48] meaning this may become more common and implemented more effectively. Our data suggests some fundamental barriers to accepting such an interaction.…”

“…To address the current deficit in conversational ability, developers have largely focused on imbuing agents with more human-like conversational qualities such as social talk [4,52] and humour [21]. The general aim is to emulate elements, and thus the qualities, of human conversation [27].…”

“…However, the majority of research on social functions of VAs focuses on improving practical use cases through social elements (e.g., [10,25,32,70,79]) rather than on designing for fulfilling social conversations with VAs. For example, Chattaraman et al [10] used a friendly and informal conversational style as a means to increase performance in a pragmatic task (i.e., online shopping), and Karatas et al [32] uses social dialogue in the car to reduce cognitive load.…”
