Introduction and spread of the cassava green mite,Mononychellus tanajoa(Bondar) (Acari: Tetranychidae), an exotic pest in Africa and the search for appropriate control methods: a review

Abstract: Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar), a spider mite new to Africa, was discovered on cassava in Uganda in 1971. This exotic mite of Neotropical origin has since spread to 27 countries, causing an estimated 13-80% reduction in cassava yield. The history of its introduction and spread in Africa is reported, and present knowledge on the taxonomy, biology, ecology and pest status of the mite, and the evolution of strategies to control it are reviewed. While attempts have been made to control M. tanajoa, it remains a ser… Show more

“…The invasion of the Americas by the red palm mite R. indica, the invasion of Asia by the coconut mite Aceria guerreronis (Keifer), the invasion of Africa by Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar), the invasion of Europe by T. evansi, and the invasion of the Americas, Eurasia and Oceania by the wheat curl mite, Aceria tosichella Keifer are clear examples of the ability of mites to colonize and establish outside their native range (Yaninek and Herren 1988;Peña et al 2012;Navajas et al 2012;Navia et al 2012a, b). The negative impact of alien invasive Acari species, as for many other groups, is unfortunately expected to increase.…”

“…Early reports indicate that the CGM was accidentally introduced in Africa when cassava was imported from South America. It was first reported in Uganda during the 1970s, from where it spread everywhere in Africa (Megevand et al, 1987;Yaninek and Herren, 1988). Previous studies have reported success in biological control of Mononychellus tanajoa Bondar (M. progresivus Doreste) in warm-humid regions in Africa, when a predatory mite, Typhlodromalus aripo De Leon, of family Phytoseiidae was released from South America (Kariuki et al, 2002;Yaninek and Hanna, 2003).…”
