Introduction: New Critical Directions in Global South Studies, Continuing the Conversation

Abstract: In this introduction to the second of two special issues on “New Critical Directions in Global South Studies,” the editors reflect on the state of the field, provide a brief discussion of analogous projects in other disciplines, and give an overview of the essays contained in the issue.

“…We suggest that the extent to which references to ‘South‐South cooperation’ are employed and resonate points to underlying issues of voice and visibility in global debates and to how established power patterns condition agendas intended to provide alternative approaches to international cooperation. On the one hand, our findings join an expanding body of work that discusses the complexities of and shifts within designations of ‘North’ and ‘South’ (Armillas‐Tiseyra & Mahler, 2022; Haug et al, 2021; Waisbich et al, 2021). “…The social and environmental history can explain these ecological differences between several northern hemisphere countries and those in the southern hemisphere, which may be, for example, a reflection of European’s political hegemony during the 19th century’s globalization and the subsequent division of the world between the West and the East (Berger, 2004 ). Power disparities between developed and developing countries are highlighted by concepts like “global south” and “global north” (Demeny, 1981 ; Armillas-Tiseyra and Mahler, 2022 ).
