“…Since intuition operates in the subconscious realm, attempts to study it as a scientific construct have generated a great deal of controversy in the fields of cognitive science and decision-making (c/f Kahneman and Klein 2009). Some scholars, despite acknowledging it as an important part of the human cognition, still perceive intuition as a mysterious concept that is far from scientific measurement (Meehl 1986;Lamond and Thompson 2000;Caverni 2001;Bonabeau 2003;Dana and Dawes 2004;Paley 2006;Evans and Over 2010). One of the reasons that have been attributed to the controversy surrounding intuitive decision-making is that it lacks the monolithic definition as well as the clearly defined qualities that are characteristic of the deliberate/analytical/rational strategy (Bargh and Morsella 2008).…”

“…The descriptive decision model therefore describes how decisions are actually made and emphasizes the reasons why the normative model will not work in timepressured and dynamic environments (Simon 1956;Dreyfus 2004;Wong 2000;Klein 2008;Okoli et al 2013). Although it is believed by some authors that the normative model is theoretically stronger than its counterpart (Lamond and Thompson 2000;Scott 2000), the problem with the normative model is that it tends to over-simplify decisionmaking in ''fluid'' environments. There is no doubt that performance could be improved if conditions allowed sufficient time.…”

“…In the relative approach, expert practice is compared to that of novices, on the basis that novices are able to achieve an expert level of proficiency. B T I E (Benner 1984) based on D model of skill acquisition (Dreyfus and Dreyfus 1986) -has heavily influenced nursing view of expertise (Eraut et al 1995;Lamond and Thompson 2000). From this perspective, novice nurses require rules to guide their action whereas experienced, expert nurses deploy internalised decision-…”
