Inulin ameliorates schizophrenia via modulation of the gut microbiota and anti-inflammation in mice

Abstract: The microbiome–gut–brain (MGB) axis, which regulates neurological and cognitive functions, plays an essential role in schizophrenia (SCZ) progression.

“…On the other hand, it was pointed out how probiotics showed no clinical utility in both negative or positive symptoms, albeit only three studies were fully reviewed [ 168 ]. Interestingly, in a murine model, inulin, which is a dietary fibre mainly produced by plants [ 169 ], was also proposed as a potential treatment in SZ patients due to its anti-inflammatory action and the effects exerted on the gut microbiota [ 170 ].…”

“…Based on the resent findings that mastitis was linked to the alterations in gastrointestinal microbiota and metabolites ( Ma et al, 2018a ; Zhong et al, 2018 ; Hu et al, 2020 ; Wang et al, 2021b ), dietary intervention to remodeling the profile of microflora appeared to be a potential strategy in preventing mastitis. Inulin was extensively reported as the “food” of probiotics in the gastrointestinal tract ( Shoaib et al, 2016 ; Guo et al, 2021 ). In the current study, dietary inulin supplementation affected the profile of fecal microbiota in the SCM cows.…”

“…Most likely, dietary fiber stimulates affective and cognitive processes through its interaction with the gut microbiome [ 100 ]. The gut microbial modulation effect of inulin (fructan) on mice with SCZ has been studied by Guo et al [ 101 ]. The authors have demonstrated that inulin alleviated the damage of brain neurons after 6 weeks of treatment of SCZ mice with inulin.…”
