Invasion of the dinoflagellate Ceratium furcoides (Levander) Langhans 1925 at tropical reservoir and its relation to environmental variables

Abstract: Resumo: Dinoflagelados do gênero Ceratium são principalmente marinhos, porém existem raras ocorrências em água doce. Show more

“…In addition, C. furcoides cell counts were high compared with Brazilian records of counts that were typically below 30 ind•mL -1 (Santos-Wisniewski et al, 2007;Silva et al, 2012;Cavalcante et al, 2013).…”

“…Determinations are made under the Guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO, 2011), which defines the limit for microcystin-LR as 1 μg•L -1 . In addition to cyanobacterial blooms, blooms of Ceratium Schrank have occurred in tropical fresh waters in Brazil (Santos-Wisniewski et al, 2007;Matsumura-Tundisi et al, 2010;Silva et al, 2012;Cavalcante et al, 2013). Although there is no documented production of toxins by this dinoflagellate, blooms of Ceratium have been related to decreased water quality (Hart and Wagg, 2009;Ewerts et al, 2013) and water treatment efficacy, reducing coagulation, sedimentation and longevity of the filters (Ewerts et al, 2013;Van der Walt, 2011).…”

“…Since then several records of the occurrence of this dinoflagellate in many Brazilian aquatic ecosystems were published (SantosWisniewski et al, 2007;Matsumura-Tundisi et al, 2010;Oliveira et al, 2011;Severiano et al, 2012;Silva et al, 2012. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the occurrence of Ceratium furcoides is reported in a highaltitude natural, shallow, temporary lake in Brazil.…”

“…Ceratium Schrank is dinoflagellate genus commonly found in marine environments, and considered invasive in continental waters (Silva et al, 2012). Species of this genus are able to develop blooms due to their mobility and resistance to sedimentation, to the occupation of the surface layer and optimised use of resources such as light and nutrients (Donagh et al, 2005).…”
