Phytochemical study of the larvicidal fractions which were carried out for the first time, isolated of the Magonia pubescens, monitored by the study of efficacy against the 3rd larval instar of Aedes aegypti, in the search of alternatives for the control of that mosquito and to obtain structures susceptible to chemical improving of the activity for the synthetic via of other derived. The fractions with biological activity were monitored chemically through chromatography of thin layer, using as revealing a solution acid of vanillin, analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance of hydrogen and spectrometry of masses. The bioassays with the fractions were accomplished with five replications, controlled at the temperature of 28+/-1 degrees C, 80+/-5% of relative humidity and 12 h light. The found lethal concentrations of the fraction that it presented the largest potential larvicidal, MP-9, LC50 and LC90, were of 3.1 and 36.6 ppm, respectively. All the experiments were accompanied by a control series, containing the same number of larvae.
A fungus, isolated from the root bark of Melia azedarach (Meliaceae), from which a series of meroterpenes have been reported, was identified as Penicillium brasilianum based on analysis of the ITS region of ribosomal DNA. From a rice culture of this fungus, the known phenylpropanoid amides brasiliamide A and B were obtained together with and a new, slightly modified congener, along with the meroterpenoids preaustinoid A1, preaustinoid B2 and austinolide. The compounds were isolated by the use of combined chromatographic procedures and identified by physical methods, mainly 1D and 2D NMR experiments, with distinction for 1H{15N} HMBC applied to brasiliamide A. The amides were tested for their antimicrobial activity and showed only weak inhibitory effects, against a set of pathogenic bacteria
The fungus Penicillium sp was isolated from the root bark of Melia azedarach after surface sterilisation and cultivated for three weeks on sterilised rice. A new meroterpene, named austinoneol, and the known meroterpenes 7-β-acetoxy-dehydroaustin, neoaustin and dehydroaustin were isolated from the methanol extract of this rice culture. Their structures were identified after extensive spectroscopic studies, which also helped on the revision of 1 H and 13 C chemical shift assignment for some of the known meroterpenes.
Secondary production of zooplankton, the main energy pathway in many aquatic ecosystems, is crucial to an Understanding of functioning of these systems function. In this study, we analyzed the magnitude and seasonal variations of the population density, biomass and secondary production of Cladocera in the Furnas Reservoir (Brazil). Samples were carried out monthly at 6 points in the reservoir, from August 2006 to July 2007. Main physical and chemical variables in the water column were measured in situ. Data on density, biomass and development times were obtained and used to calculate the secondary production of eight Cladocera species. The total production of Cladocera varied from 0.02 to 28.6 mgDWm -3 .day, among the sampling sites. The highest values were recorded in spring and summer months (September to January), and were correlated to the increase in the biomass of the phytoplankton. The mean production:biomass ratio was 0.32. The level of production in Furnas Reservoir fell within the range of those reported in the literature and was of the same order of magnitude of the production values recorded for oligotrophic reservoirs. Cladocera production differed spatially inside the Sapucaí compartment and also in the temporal scale, seasonally. Keywords: zooplankton, productivity, reservoir tropical, trophic state.
