Chapter 16. Pseudallescheria/Scedosporium mycosis Fig. 16.1. Dendrogram of relationships in the Pseudallescheria species complex, determined using multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Clades are numbered 1-5, according to the type of sexual or asexual reproduction. Clade 1 (S. aurantiacum) is a clonal population of asexual reproducing strains with near identical MLST genotypes. Clade 2 (P. minutispora) is minor meiosporic species. Clade 3 (S. dehoogii) is a small cluster of clonal genotypes, asexually reproducing, with little genetic variation. Clade 4 (S. apiospermum) is a large diverse group with genetic variation suggestive of a sexually recombining population. Clade 5, the major Pseudallescheria clade, is genetically distinct from S. apiospermum. It contains 4 described species, of which P. boydii is the major and most clinically important. P. ellipsoidea, P. fusoidea, and P. angusta are uncommon. Each of these 4 species is an inbreeding population with little intraspecific genetic variation.
