Investigating Aeroelastic Performance of Multi-Mega Watt Wind Turbine Rotors Using CFD

Abstract: Recent trends in wind power technology are focusing on increasing power output through an increase in rotor diameter. As the rotor diameter increases, aeroelastic effects become increasingly important in the design of an efficient blade. A detailed understanding of the fluid elastic coupling can lead to improved designs; yielding more power, reduced maintenance, and ultimately leading to an overall reduction in the cost of electricity. In this work, a high fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodolog… Show more

“…CFD/CSD coupled studies for wind turbines are also available. Corson et al [13] performed coupled fluidestructure interaction (FSI) simulations for a 13.2 MW blade design using the commercial CFD solver AcuSolve and the MBD solver FAST. Bazilevs et al [14] proposed an FSI procedure for wind turbine simulations using a FEM based CFD solver and a structural solver based on the isogeometric rotation-free KirchohoffeLove composite shell and the bending strip method.…”

“…The performance predictions are compared with those of Corson et al 3 Wind turbine airfoil sections are often designed to maintain laminar flow at low angles of attack. Consequently, using traditional turbulence models without a transition model can result in an overprediction of viscous drag.…”

“…The AcuSolve simulations also revealed a weak dependence of predictions on whether the blade was treated as rigid or flexible. Though Corson et al 3 performed a full CFD simulation of the Sandia 100-m blade, the focus of their study was primarily on blade structural loadings instead of the flowfield generated by the blade.…”

“…Attempts have been made by several researchers to include viscosity and flow separation (Sørensen, 1983;Voutsinas, 2006), however there are still unresolved issues related to convergence (Hansen et al, 2006). With advances in computing power, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solving the Navier-Stokes equations are also increasingly being used (Corson, Griffith, Ashwill, & Shakib, 2012;Simms, Schreck, Hand, & Fingersh, 2001).…”
