Investigating and modeling metadata use to support information architecture development in the statistical knowledge network

Abstract: Metadata and an appropriate metadata model are nontrivial components of information architecture conceptualization and implementation, particularly when disparate and dispersed systems are integrated. Metadata availability can enhance retrieval processes, improve information organization and navigation, and support management of digital objects. To support these activities efficiently, metadata need to be modeled appropriately for the tasks. The authors' work focuses on how to understand and model metadata req… Show more

“…In JASIST, we found approximately 100 publications with the term "IA" in the body of their texts. Only 10 of them are really about IA and have the term "IA" stated directly in the title and approached as a research subject (Burford, 2011(Burford, , 2014Cunliffe et al, 2002;Dillon, 2002;Hauck & Weisband, 2002;Haverty, 2002;Hert et al, 2007;Latham, 2002;Rosenfeld, 2002;Toms, 2002). In ARIST, we found one publication, a literature review: Jacob and Loehrlein (2009).…”

“…Metadata are known to facilitate the retrieval of texts, improve the organization of the information, and support the administration of digital objects (Hert, Denn, Gillman, Sun Oh, Pattwell, & Hernández, 2007). Four levels were reviewed to explore the existence of metadata, as shown in Table 6.…”

“…In a similar manner, the information systems and information science communities have long recognized and emphasized the importance of metadata (i.e., an ontological aspect of the domain) in conceptualization, design, and evaluation and in scientific discovery and communication. For example, Hert, Denn, Gillman, Oh, Pattuelli, and Hernández () stress the integral role of metadata in conceptualization and design of information systems. While examining the importance of metadata in scientific communication and discovery, Willis, Greenberg, and White () argue that discipline‐specific metadata schemes have contributed to establishing artificial barriers to data discovery and reuse across disciplines, and, furthermore, such schemes interfere with interdisciplinary scientific progress.…”
