Investigating Factors that Influence Math Homework Expectancy: A Multilevel Approach

Abstract: The present study investigated several clusters of variables influencing students’ math homework expectancy based on 3018 students in grade 8 in China. Results revealed that math homework expectancy was positively associated with homework quality at both the individual and class level. At the individual level, math homework expectancy was positively associated with prior math knowledge, parent education, homework interest, homework favorability, parent autonomy support, mastery-approach, and homework value. “…Expectancy beliefs are students' perceptions of the possibility of success in the upcoming learning task, and task value, including achievement value, intrinsic value, utility value, and cost, is the student's perception of the value of the learning task. Previous studies have suggested that expectancy is positively associated with interest (Xu et al, 2020), and task expectancy motivation could predict students' future interest in math at the individual and class level (Ruiz-Alfonso et al, 2021). This also appeared to be the case in the present study.…”

“…Eccles et al (1983) argues that students’ learning interest stems from their expectancy beliefs and the value of the task, collectively referred to as “expectancy value.” Expectancy beliefs are students’ perceptions of the possibility of success in the upcoming learning task, and task value, including achievement value, intrinsic value, utility value, and cost, is the student’s perception of the value of the learning task. Previous studies have suggested that expectancy is positively associated with interest ( Xu et al, 2020 ), and task expectancy motivation could predict students’ future interest in math at the individual and class level ( Ruiz-Alfonso et al, 2021 ). This also appeared to be the case in the present study.…”

“…Homework management refers to students' use of self-regulated learning strategies in the process of completing homework (Xu & Corno, 2003). Students who have homework management skills tend to complete more homework (Valle et al, 2019;Xu, 2010Xu, , 2022Xu et al, 2015) and have higher academic success (Xu, 2009(Xu, , 2022Xu et al, 2020;Yang & Tu, 2020). The consistency of the results obtained with the literature supports the validity of the Turkish form of the homework management scale.…”
