Investigating off-grid systems for a mobile automated milking facility

Abstract: This study examined the potential of renewable energy sources to provide the necessary power for a mobile off-grid automated milking system (AMS) and associated facilities on pasture. This involved choosing the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable power supply for a mobile AMS in Sweden operating May–September and milking 20 cows per day. Weather data, input from the milking system manufacturer (DeLaval), and outputs from two mathematical models, Insight Maker and HOMER, were used to … Show more

“…Hossain et al (2021) have investigated the feasibility of solar powered central receiver system to supply affordable and sustainable electricity for distant Bangladeshi area. El Zein and Gebresenbet (2021) have used Insight Maker and HOMER software to optimize the mobile stand-alone hybrid system used to electrify an industrial plant, and the authors tested different RESs like biogas, ethanol in addition to solar and battery. Jamal et al (2020) have studied different criteria to optimize the generation size of PV/BES DG stand-alone MG used to electrify distant Australian consumers.…”

“…Currently, the most widely used renewable energy source is solar energy-it is safe, clean and easy to use, therefore it has become one of the most suitable energy sources that can be used in various fields and can be an alternative to fossil energy sources [18][19][20][21][22]. Many studies offer mobile PV systems solutions for autonomous electricity generation [23][24][25][26]. With regard to temporary shelters, electricity is usually provided by off-grid solutions (diesel fuel generators), which are not a sustainable energy supply because of their dependence on fuel availability.…”

“…On the other hand, diesel generators have a lower initial cost but higher fuel and maintenance costs. Offgrid PV systems are widely promoted for use in rural areas to generate cleaner, safer, and more reliable energy [26], [27]. Nowadays, hybrid system installation is completed quickly and easily.…”
