Paper folding is a common activity in East Asian kindergartens, but its potential value to early spatial skills have not been empirically explored. This study aims to investigate whether and how paper folding skills can predict spatial ability (SA) in the early years. Altogether 101 preschoolers (Ngirl = 45, Mage = 4.54, SD = 0.75) were randomly sampled from two Hong Kong kindergartens and invited to complete the map-use and the paper folding tasks. The paper folding task taps two levels of children’s paper folding skills: Basic Folding Skill (BFS) and Advanced Folding Skill (AFS). The parents reported the demographic information and their involvement in spatial activities at home. The results indicated the following: (1) there was a significant age-related increase in the paper folding performance; (2) child age could significantly predict both BFS (β = 0.551, p < 0.001) and AFS (β = 0.627, p < 0.001), while parental involvement could only predict BFS (β = 0.246, p < 0.001); (3) after controlling for confounders, paper folding skills could significantly predict SA as measured by the map-use task; (4) BFS was found to mediate the relationship between parental involvement and SA. The educational implications of these findings are also discussed.

ÖZEvrensel bir sanat kabul edilen origami, yediden yetmişe herkesin uğraşı olan sayılı faaliyetlerden biridir. Origami, tarihsel süreç içinde farklı meslek grubundan insanların elinde gelişim gösterirken aynı zamanda bu insanların kendi mesleklerinde farkındalık oluşturmasına ve topluma katkı sağlamalarına vesile olmuştur. Bu nedenledir ki; bir bireyin, bireysel gelişimi, mesleğinde farkındalık oluşturma ve toplumsal sorunlara dair çözüm üretmede origami sanatından faydalanılabilmesi sebebiyle farklı ülkeler eğitim ve öğretimde origamiye yer vermiştir. Değişik kurum ve kuruluşlarda görev alarak ülkemizin geleceğine yön çizecek üniversite öğrencilerinin origami çalışmalarının birey ve toplum açısından önemine ilişkin görüşlerini bilmek origami çalışmalarının ülkemizde yaygınlaştırılması açısından önem arz etmektedir. Bu bağlamda bu araştırmada, geleceğimizi emanet edeceğimiz üniversite öğrencilerinin origami çalışmalarının bireysel gelişime, meslekte farkındalık oluşturmaya ve toplumsal sorunlara çözüm üretmede katkısının neler olabileceğine ilişkin görüşlerini ortaya koymak amaçlanmıştır. Bu araştırma nitel araştırma yaklaşımı kapsamında tamamlanmıştır. Araştırmada kullanılan veriler, Türkiye'nin kuzeyinde yer alan bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim gören 80 öğrencinin, araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan, 9 açık uçlu soruya verdikleri yanıtlardan elde edilmiştir. Veriler toplandıktan sonra nitel veri analiz yöntemlerinden biri olan betimsel analiz yöntemi kullanılarak veriler analiz edilmiştir. * Bu çalışmanın bir bölümü, Amasya Üniversitesi tarafından düzenlenen Uluslararası Öğrenme, Öğretim ve Eğitim Araştırmaları Kongresi'nde 7 Eylül 2018 tarihinde sözlü bildiri olarak sunulmuştur.Araştırma bulgularına göre; origami çalışmaları bireysel gelişime katkısı bakımından ele alındığında; üniversite öğrencilerinin hayal gücünü geliştirme, yaratıcılığı artırma, matematik zekayı geliştirme ve mutlu olmanın önemini kavramaya yönelik olumlu katkılar sağladığı noktasında hemfikir oldukları görülmektedir. Origaminin meslekte farkındalık oluşturmaya ilişkin katkısı genel anlamda üç kategoride değerlendirilmiştir. Bunlar bireyin mesleği sahiplenmesi, meslekteki başarısı ve çalışma ortamındaki meslek arkadaşları veya öğrencilerle doğru iletişim kurabilmedir. Origami çalışmalarının toplumsal sorunlara dair katkısı ise toplum içinde mutlu olabilmeyi prensip haline getirme, toplumsal davranış kazanma, sosyal sorumluluk bilinci geliştirme ve kültürel etkileşime açık olma olarak belirtilmiştir. Çalışmada bu kavramsal çerçeve ile origami çalışmalarının birey ve toplum açısından önemine ilişkin tartışma ve planlanan araştırmalara ışık tutması bakımından sonuç ve öneri kısımlarına yer verilmiştir. Measuring Spatial Ability and Geometric Thinking Level of Prospective Elementary School Teachers Using the Rasch Model

The objectives: (1) measuring spatial ability and geometric thinking level of Prospective Elementary School Teachers (PGSD students), (2) analyzing difficulties faced on a certain spatial ability. The study used a mixed-method quantitative and qualitative. Researchers developed test items to measure the spatial ability and geometric thinking of 139 Prospective Elementary School Teachers (PGSD students), Universitas Negeri Semarang. The sampling method employed was cluster random sampling, while three students selected for the interview were based on the 'poor' and 'very poor' category. Data analysis with the Rasch Model showed that the item reliability, item validity, item separation, and unidimensionality were classified as 'good'. The results revealed that spatial ability and geometric thinking of Prospective Elementary School Teachers were classified as 'fair' (62.5%) and 'good' (31.7%). The difficulties in completing tasks of spatial ability primarily on the perception and relation, which happened due to their lacking of imagination.
