Investigating the Interrelationships among Occupant Attitude, Knowledge and Behaviour in LEED-Certified Buildings Using Structural Equation Modelling

Abstract: The proliferation of residential building energy consumption and CO2 emissions has led many countries to develop buildings under the green rating systems umbrella. Many such buildings, however, fail to meet their designed energy performance, which is possibly attributable to occupant behaviour and unforeseen building usages. The research problem lies in the fact that occupant environmental behaviour is a complex socio-cultural-technical issue that needs to be addressed to achieve the desired energy savings. “…According to Schreiber et al (2006) minimum values of CFI and IFI considered as acceptable is >0.9. According to Hooper et al (2008) acceptable values of RMSEA lie between 0.05 and 0.1 (Gul & NezamiFar, 2020). The fit indices derived from AMOS were CFI = 0.905; IFI = 0.906; and RMSEA = 0.074 (see Table 4).…”

“…This short overview illustrates that household behavior is complex and the relationship between values, attitudes, and behavior is not linear, as households can act in ways that go against what they know or believe is the most environmentally friendly way to act [26]. On the one hand, attitudes and values are important for engaging individuals to acknowledge the importance of and committing to reducing GHG emissions.…”

“…From this perspective, areas such as individual consumption, household energy use, and travel choices have been explored [1][2][3][4][5]. In addition, attention has been given to examining the relationship between the built environment and the individual, since a deeper understanding of occupants' behavior in buildings is crucial for achieving sustainability goals [6][7][8][9][10]. Among the many behaviors individuals engage in, recycling is one that it is important to understand in order to decrease the environmental impact of production and consumption.…”
