Investigating the Torricelli law using a pressure sensor with the Arduino and MakerPlot

Abstract: This paper examines the Torricelli law for the flow of liquid from a small drain hole in a container. It shows how the system can be modelled using either a traditional calculus-based approach or a non-calculus step-wise computer method appropriate to the background of the student group. An experiment to measure the head of out-flowing liquid as a function of time is then described. The conventional method of manual timing is replaced by a pressure-sensing technique involving use of the Arduino microcontroller… Show more

“…A wide range of experiments and solutions are shown where sensors and the Arduino platform are used to teach physics efficiently and attractively while the cost is kept very low [1][2][3][4][5]. Sensors have an output (voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance) that can be handled by electronics.…”

“…The introduction of experimental methodologies for data acquisition using the computer represents a viable alternative for exploration and statistical analysis of data in physics classes. The use of computers and microcontrollers has become increasingly integrated into Physics teaching activities, considering that the experiments conducted by these technologies become more attractive to students compared to classes in the traditional model (ATKIN, 2018;DWORAKOWSKI, et al, 2016).…”
