Investigating Useful Properties of Four Streptomyces Strains Active against Fusarium graminearum Growth and Deoxynivalenol Production on Wheat Grains by qPCR

Abstract: Streptomyces spp. can be exploited as biocontrol agents (BCAs) against plant pathogens such as Fusarium graminearum, the main causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB) and against the contamination of grains with deoxynivalenol (DON). In the present research, four Streptomyces strains active against F. graminearum in dual plate assays were characterized for their ability to colonize detached wheat grains in the presence of F. graminearum and to limit DON production. The pathogen and BCA abundance were assesse… Show more

“…In addition, the frequency of F. graminearum isolated from ears ranged from 30 to 71% with an average of 57%, and from stalks ranged from 43 to 81%, with the average of 65% 39 . Although the isolation frequency of F. graminearum from CFSR was only 3.65% in our present study, the potential risk of mycotoxins produced by F. graminearum to human health cannot be ignored 40 .…”

“…DNA was extracted from lyophilised mycelia following the protocol (200 microL) of the DNeasy Mericon food Kit (Qiagen, Germantown, MD, USA) [ 24 ]. Lyophilised mycelia (200 mg) were weighted and placed in a 2 mL microcentrifuge tube in presence of 1 mL food lysis buffer (provided by the kit) and 2.5 μL Proteinase K solution (provided by the kit).…”

“…Several studies have shown an effective biocontrol potential of Streptomyces spp. in suppression of the growth of F. graminearum , Aspergillus flavus , and their mycotoxin production ( Boukaew et al, 2020 ; Colombo et al, 2020 ).…”
