Zhongning wolfberry is a famous geographical indication (GI) in China. The concentrations of twenty elements (K, Mg, Fe, Ca, Zn, Cu, Mn, Al, Sr, Rb, Mo, Tb, Cd, Co, V, As, Cs, Pr, Dy and Gd) in samples were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis. The results indicated that nineteen minerals (except K) represented significant differences among regions. The correct classification rates of original group and cross-validation of Zhongning wolfberry were 95.7% and 85.7%, for these nineteen variables. Furthermore, there was no significant difference for all variables in samples from three picking periods. It was feasible to distinguish Zhongning wolfberry based on mineral profiles with chemometric approaches, and the study could serve as a reference for the authentication of wolfberries and the prevention of deceptive labelling of other GI products.

Goji berries' bioactive compounds, which allowed classifying them as superfruits, led to an enormous increase of its consumption in western countries. However, the potential risk of allergy is a concern. In this study, we aimed to characterise the proteome of goji berries (Lycium barbarum) and identify proteins with putative role in the allergic reaction (IgE-binding proteins). We firstly used twodimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis followed by mass spectrometry (MS) to characterise goji berries' proteome, and then Immunoblot reactivity with plasma from tomato and potato (same botanical family, Solanaceae) allergic individuals was assessed to characterise goji berries IgE-binding proteins. An inhibition assay was further performed to evaluate cross-reactivity among potato, tomato and goji berries. We significantly identified 93 out of the 180 MS analysed spots, corresponding to 29 protein functions. From these, 11 could be identified as goji berries IgE-binding proteins. We further demonstrated cross-reactivity between goji berries, tomato and potato. ARTICLE HISTORY

CE‐UV for the characterization of passion fruit juices provenance by amino acids profile with the aid of chemometric tools

A separation method was developed in order to quantify free amino acids in passion fruit juices using CE-UV. A selective derivatization reaction with FMOC followed by MEKC analysis was chosen due to the highly interconnected mobilities of the analytes, enabling the separation of 22 amino acids by lipophilicity differences, as will be further discussed. To achieve such results, the method was optimized concerning BGE composition (concentrations, pH, and addition of organic modifier) and running conditions (temperature and applied voltage). The optimized running conditions were: a BGE composed by 60 mmol/L borate buffer at pH 10.1, 30 mmol/L SDS and 5 % methanol; running for 40 min at 23°C and 25 kV. The method was validated and applied on eight brands plus one fresh natural juice, detecting 12 amino acids. Quantification of six analytes combined with principal component analysis was capable to characterize different types of juices and showed potential to detect adulteration on industrial juices. Glutamic acid was found to be the most concentrated amino acid in all juices, exceeding 1 g/L in all samples and was also crucial for the correct classification of a natural juice, which presented a concentration of 22 g/L.
