Investigation of Bimodal Particles Based Magnetorheological Elastomers

Abstract: This paper presents the study of rheological and mechanical properties of MR elastomers fabricated using small and large particle. Analysis indicated that MR elastomers fabricated with bimodal particles at a specific particle ratio ingredient show enhanced MR effect compared with those fabricated with monoparticles. MR elastomer samples were fabricated by using small and large particles with sizes of 5m and 50m respectively. Their rheological and mechanical properties were characterized with a MR rheometer. “…The particles are typically from iron particles, which have a high permeability, low remnant and highly saturated magnetization [3]. Since 1996, the magnetizable particles used for MREs are produced by well-known chemical companies such as BASF (carbonyl iron, spherical shape, 1-20 microns) [3][4][5][6]; ISP (carbonyl iron, spherical) [7,8]; Hoganas (iron powder, irregular shape, above 20 micron) [9,10] and Sigma-Aldrich (carbonyl iron / iron penta carbonyl) [11][12][13]. While, silicone rubber (RTV and HTV), natural rubber, synthetic rubber and polyurethanes [14] are utilized as the elastomeric matrix.…”
